America is Regressing into a Developing Nation for Most People
A new book by economist Peter Temin finds that the U.S. is no longer one country, but dividing into two separate economic and political worlds
Hasnain says:
"America’s underlying racism has a continuing distorting impact. A majority of the low-wage sector is white, with blacks and Latinos making up the other part, but politicians learned to talk as if the low-wage sector is mostly black because it allowed them to appeal to racial prejudice, which is useful in maintaining support for the structure of the dual economy — and hurting everyone in the low-wage sector. Temin notes that “the desire to preserve the inferior status of blacks has motivated policies against all members of the low-wage sector.”"

What Happens When You Send a Zero-Day to a Bank?
In October 2008, shortly after introduction of the original iPhone I wanted to know if it is possible to trade stocks using my Zecco tradin...
Hasnain says:
"What if Raneri is a cunt and sues you? Well I think he has the biggest risk, there are millions of transactions that happened at his company while was CEO & CTO and he did non properly report to authorities that he could not verify their authenticity. Also, he probably failed to make this material disclosure to the buyers when he sold this company. Either way he landed as a partner at PwC and probably has better things to do."
We need better regulations for security

Trial and Terror
Most people prosecuted for terrorism since 9/11 never committed a violent act

Hasnain says:
"Very few terrorism defendants had the means or opportunity to commit an act of violence. The majority had no direct connection to terrorist organizations. Many were caught up in FBI stings, in which an informant or undercover agent posed as a member of a terrorist organization. The U.S. government nevertheless defines such cases as international terrorism."

The United States of Work
Employers exercise vast control over our lives, even when we're not on the job. How did our bosses gain power that the government itself doesn't hold?
Hasnain has not yet written a summary for this.

Australia unveils major changes to citizenship process - BBC News
Applicants will face stricter tests on their English and "Australian values", the government says.
Hasnain says:
As a friend pointed out, these schemes are kind of racist because they don't always enforce things equally.
Case in point from the article: "In explaining what constituted "Australian values", Mr Turnbull said migrants must demonstrate support for religious freedom and gender equality."
But would they deport a born-and-bred Australian who doesn't support religious freedom or gender equality (or partakes in domestic abuse?). I highly doubt it.

The Practical Nomad blog: Chicago airport police attack passenger on Republic Airlines plane
The Practical Nomad: Edward Hasbrouck's blog
Hasnain says:
This is an amazing read on the United flight incident. Covers a lot of things in detail that I hadn't known about, including how the police weren't really police and how the airline responsible wasn't just United.
"Major airlines like United want to keep their contractors financially dependent, but don't want to take on the costs of operating feeder flights with their own higher-paid employees. Contracting out these flights enables airlines to evade their union contracts and create a de facto two-tier wage scale, with contractors' employees paid less than the union scale for mainline airline employees. United wants Republic to emerge from bankruptcy and keep flying, which probably depends on Republic dodging the bullet of blame for this incident."
